Karel Ooms (Belgian painter) 1845 - 1900

Karel Ooms was a pupil of the renowned academic painter Nicaise De Keyser. In 1871 he established himself as an independent painter in Antwerp. He mainly painted portraits and historical works. Karel Ooms made fame when he was commissioned to make two large paintings for the criminal courtroom of the Antwerp Courthouse. Karel Ooms achieved awards for his oeuvre in Prague (1877), Amsterdam (1883), Adelaide (1887) Melbourne (1888) and Chicago (1893). In 1897 he married Edith Van Eersel, a rich and art-loving wife, widow of artistocratic Emile della Faille. Finally, Karel Ooms died during his retreat in Cannes in 1900.
