Sidney Harold Meteyard (British painter) 1868 - 1947
Meteyard studied at the Birmingham School of Art under Edward R Taylor (1838-1911). Later taught design applied to flat surfaces, gesso, leatherwork and lettering. Married one of his pupils, Kate Eadie. Known as a painter, designer of stained glass and enamels, and a book illustrator. Much of his work was still life, or mythological and fairytales themes. Lived and worked in Birmingham for much of his life. Member of the Birmingham School of Artists, exhibited 1896-1937. Exhibited at the Paris Salon, Liverpool and the Royal Academy, London, 1900-1918. An original member of the Birmingham Group, artists who were influenced by the art and philosophy of Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98), William Morris (1834-96) and John Ruskin (1819-1900). In collaboration with others including Morris he produced 'The Quest', a magazine printed by the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft.
