Alfred Guillou (French painter) 1844 - 1926

Alfred Guillou received his first drawing lessons from lithographer Théodore Lemonnier he met at Concarneau in 1860. On his advice he moved to Paris in 1862 where he attended for some time the Swiss Academy and continued his training with Alexandre Cabanel. This is where he met Jules Bastien-Lepage , Fernand Cormon and Théophile Deyrolle. He made his debut at the Salon with Young Breton Fisherman in 1868 and returned to his hometown. His favorite subjects are taken from the daily life of the fishing port often on large formats as the sardine Concarneau 1896, the Museum of Fine Arts in Quimper or the landing of tuna Concarneau 1902, Museum of History of Saint-Brieuc . With his friend Theophilus Deyrolle who married his sister Suzanne, Alfred Guillou is originally a colony of artists based in Concarneau. Established as the Pont-Aven it will influence many artists for whom the ancient customs and traditions of the Breton people is in their eyes a form of primitivism, Leon Joubert , Francois Alfred Delobbe , Antonin Mercie , but Jules Bastien Lepage , Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, etc ...
