Albert Roelofs was the son of painter Willem Roelofs (1822-1897). He had his first painting lessons of his father. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and the Académie Julian in Paris with Victor Gilsoul. He painted interiors, landscapes, portraits, still life and animals. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, the Dutch Theater Society in The Hague and Pulchri Studio. Roelofs had many pupils, among others Queen Wilhelmina and Princess Juliana. He was married to the Dutch painter Tjieke Roelofs-Bleckmann (1877-1976). She often modeled for him.
